UPDATE: A former postal worker in California has just pleaded guilty to a massive mail fraud scheme involving the theft of checks, debit and credit cards. Mary Ann Magdamit, 31, admitted to conspiring to commit bank fraud, with her criminal activities spanning at least three years, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California.

Magdamit, who worked at the Torrance Main Post Office, began her illicit operation in 2022 and continued until July 2025. She is accused of stealing personal information, checks, and cards from the mail, activating these cards for online purchases, and even selling some to accomplices. Federal prosecutors revealed that her actions led to significant financial losses for federally insured banks and credit unions.

Arrested on July 1, Magdamit has been in federal custody since. During her arrest, authorities uncovered evidence of her continued use of stolen credit cards. A second search of her home revealed a staggering 133 stolen credit and debit cards, 16 U.S. Department of Treasury checks, and a loaded ghost gun.

Prosecutors noted that Magdamit flaunted her earnings on social media, showcasing a thick wad of cash. She allegedly used this money to fund luxurious purchases, including a Rolex watch and extravagant trips to Turks and Caicos and Aruba.

In a stark warning, the Justice Department stated, “Federally insured banks and credit unions were victimized in this scheme.” Her actions not only defrauded financial institutions but also endangered the security of individuals’ personal information.

Magdamit now faces a potential prison sentence of up to 30 years. Her sentencing hearing is scheduled for October 27, where she could be held accountable for her extensive fraudulent activities.

As this case unfolds, it highlights the vulnerabilities within the postal service and underscores the importance of safeguarding personal information against identity theft. The community is left to reflect on the implications of such breaches and the urgent need for enhanced security measures.
