Darren Bailey, a former Illinois state senator, is officially launching his second campaign for the Illinois gubernatorial seat on Thursday, October 5, 2023. This announcement comes after a recent attempt to secure a congressional seat in the Republican primary for Illinois’ 12th Congressional District, where he narrowly lost to incumbent Representative Mike Bost.
In a message posted on social media, Bailey emphasized his commitment to the state, stating, “I’m leaving the farm to fight for you — for your family, your freedom, and the future of Illinois. If you’re ready to restore common sense to Springfield, join our movement today.” His campaign is set to be supported by Aaron Del Mar, the chairman of the Cook County Republican Party, who will serve as his running mate.
Bailey first garnered statewide attention in 2020 when he filed a lawsuit against Governor J.B. Pritzker, challenging his authority during the COVID-19 pandemic. Although he lost the case, it drew significant media coverage, with Pritzker labeling the lawsuit a “cheap political stunt.”
Democratic leaders have already begun to respond to Bailey’s candidacy. Izzi Levy, a spokesperson for the Democratic Governors Association, criticized Bailey, stating, “Darren Bailey has returned for another attempt to drag Illinois backwards and bring Donald Trump’s chaotic, destructive, and deeply unpopular agenda to the state.” She further claimed that Bailey’s record includes opposition to measures aimed at reducing gun violence and support for extreme plans to ban abortion.
If elected, Bailey would become the first Republican governor of Illinois since Bruce Rauner, who held the office from 2015 to 2019. Despite Illinois being known as a Democratic stronghold, the state has seen several Republican governors over the years. Notably, from 1977 to 2003, the Republican Party maintained continuous control of the governor’s office.
The 2026 gubernatorial race is poised to be competitive, with Bailey positioning himself as a candidate for change in a state often dominated by Democratic leadership. Bailey’s campaign will likely focus on appealing to voters seeking alternatives to the current administration’s policies.
As the election approaches, both parties will intensify their efforts to shape public perception and mobilize their bases, making the race one to watch in the upcoming years.
