Catholic Charities of the Finger Lakes launched a crucial food drive on November 14, 2025, aiming to collect 500 frozen turkeys for families in need ahead of Thanksgiving. The event, hosted at the Walmart in Seneca Falls, New York, runs through November 16, providing an opportunity for the community to support local families struggling to put food on the table during the holiday season.
The need for such initiatives has become increasingly urgent, particularly in light of the recent government shutdown and the temporary suspension of SNAP benefits. “Right now, there are so many families in need, especially with the holidays approaching,” said Cruz, a volunteer involved in the drive. The organization is also seeking non-perishable food items to bolster supplies at food pantries across Seneca, Ontario, and Cayuga counties.
On the drive’s opening day, Cruz and her team were already hard at work early in the morning, having risen at 3 a.m. to prepare for the influx of donations. “I was up at 12:30 this morning just to make sure everything was ready,” she said, holding a cup of coffee while overseeing the donation process. Participants in the food drive receive a complimentary cider donut and freshly made cider for their contributions, creating a festive atmosphere as the community comes together.
Community engagement is at the heart of this initiative. “We need to come together and do something good for the community, bringing everyone together to help other families,” Cruz emphasized. The food drive not only aims to collect turkeys but also encourages residents to donate other food items that can provide essential support during the holiday season.
The event continues until noon on Sunday at the Walmart on North Road in Seneca Falls. Attendees can enter to win prizes, further incentivizing participation. Monetary donations are also accepted online, allowing for broader support from those who may be unable to attend in person.
As Thanksgiving approaches, the efforts of Catholic Charities of the Finger Lakes highlight the importance of community solidarity in addressing food insecurity. With local families relying heavily on organizations like these, the drive offers a vital lifeline during a challenging time.
