The Philadelphia Flyers are set to commemorate the life and legacy of legendary goaltender Bernie Parent with a special celebration of life event. This follows the team’s attendance at Parent’s funeral on October 3, 2023, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Doylestown, Pennsylvania.

Former players and current team members alike have spoken fondly of Parent, who was a beloved figure both on and off the ice. Sean Couturier, a current Flyer and fellow French Canadian, recalled how Parent’s presence at games created a welcoming atmosphere. “He was at pretty much every game,” Couturier noted. “Even at a young age, he’d make you feel comfortable around here.”

Parent’s influence extended beyond the rink. He was deeply involved with the Flyers organization and the Ed Snider Youth Hockey & Education Program, attending community events until shortly before his passing. Travis Konecny, another current Flyer, emphasized the significance of Parent’s involvement, stating, “He was a great example of being a Flyer.”

The team’s head coach, Rick Tocchet, highlighted the importance of honoring Parent’s legacy. “History’s big with me,” he said. Tocchet explained that many young players may not have been familiar with Parent but have had the opportunity to learn about him through discussions with teammates. He believes that this understanding helps to preserve Parent’s legacy within the organization.

Parent is particularly remembered for his stellar performances during the Flyers’ back-to-back Stanley Cup victories in 1974 and 1975. He earned prestigious accolades, including the Vezina Trophy as the NHL’s top goaltender and the Conn Smythe Trophy as the postseason MVP, both awarded to him twice.

“He lived down the shore; everybody knew him,” Tocchet added. “He was a part of the fabric of the shore down there. He was an accessible guy.” Couturier reflected on the team’s decision to attend the funeral, remarking, “It was just the right thing to do.”

The upcoming celebration of life will take place at the Xfinity Mobile Arena and will provide fans an opportunity to pay their respects and celebrate Parent’s remarkable career. The Flyers hope to instill the values that Parent embodied in their current roster, ensuring that his legacy continues to inspire future generations of players and fans.

As the Flyers move forward, they carry with them the memories and lessons imparted by Bernie Parent, a true icon in the world of hockey.
