A devastating fire at a popular nightclub in Goa, India, has resulted in the deaths of at least 25 individuals, including tourists. The tragic incident occurred shortly after midnight on December 3, 2023, in Arpora, a well-known party destination in North Goa. According to state officials, the majority of the deceased were kitchen staff, with three to four being tourists.
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant confirmed that six other individuals sustained injuries but are currently in stable condition. The fire was reportedly ignited by a gas cylinder explosion, which has since been extinguished, as reported by the Press Trust of India. All bodies have been recovered from the scene.
Witnesses indicated that approximately 100 people were dancing inside the club when the fire broke out. As chaos ensued, many patrons attempted to escape to the kitchen area below, where they became trapped alongside the staff. The nightclub’s location along the Arpora river backwaters, coupled with a narrow entry and exit, hindered firefighting efforts. Fire brigades were forced to park their tankers about 400 meters away, further delaying rescue operations.
Safety Concerns and Government Response
Local village council official Roshan Redkar stated that authorities had previously issued a demolition notice for the nightclub due to a lack of a construction permit. However, he noted that higher officials later retracted the order. In light of the incident, the state government has initiated an inquiry to ascertain the cause of the fire and whether fire safety regulations were properly enforced.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences via social media, describing the incident as deeply saddening. He stated that the state government is providing all possible assistance to those affected and has reached out to Sawant for updates on the situation.
