New York Wines

The Finger Lakes region of New York has been named the Wine Enthusiast’s 2025 American Wine Region of the Year, recognizing its rich history of innovation, sustainability, and excellence in cool-climate viticulture. The announcement, made on October 16, 2025, highlights the area’s unique contributions to the American wine landscape, solidifying its status among the nation’s most vibrant and collaborative wine-producing regions.

The award honors over two centuries of winemaking, beginning with the first grape plantings along Keuka Lake in 1829. Pioneering figures like Charles Fournier and Dr. Konstantin Frank played pivotal roles in advancing the cultivation of Vitis vinifera, reshaping the industry with their commitment to quality and experimentation. Their work laid the foundation for a region now celebrated for its diverse offerings, particularly its acclaimed Riesling, Chardonnay, and Cabernet Franc.

The Finger Lakes American Viticultural Area (AVA) is characterized by its eleven glacial lakes, which provide ideal conditions for slow and balanced grape ripening. Currently, the region boasts over 10,000 acres of vineyards and more than 140 wineries. This diversity allows for a rich tapestry of wine styles, reflecting both the historical roots and innovative approaches of local producers.

Collaboration is a cornerstone of the Finger Lakes’ success. Family-owned wineries serve as the backbone of the community, while organizations like the Finger Lakes Wine Alliance (FLWA) enhance the region’s visibility and promote sustainable practices. Established in 2004, the FLWA represents over 35 member wineries, focusing on marketing, education, and strategic partnerships.

Sustainability remains a priority, with the New York Sustainable Winegrowing Program (NYSWP) certifying 55 vineyards as Certified Sustainable. More than 30 wineries display the Sustainability Trustmark, ensuring that their wines are environmentally responsible and socially equitable. This commitment to stewardship not only benefits the environment but also enhances the quality of the wines produced.

The Finger Lakes region has also expanded its reach beyond national borders. Through the New York Wines Export Program, backed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Foreign Agricultural Service, local wineries have successfully introduced their products to international markets, including cities like London and Tokyo.

Sam Filler, Executive Director of the New York Wine & Grape Foundation, remarked on the significance of this recognition: “This honor from Wine Enthusiast celebrates not only the Finger Lakes, but the strength and evolution of New York’s entire wine community.” He emphasized that the award affirms a long-held belief among growers and winemakers: the Finger Lakes exemplify cool-climate excellence in America.

Echoing this sentiment, Amy Navor, Executive Director of the Finger Lakes Wine Alliance, stated, “This recognition highlights our community’s shared success and innovation, proving that when the Finger Lakes grows, the entire New York wine industry grows.” She underscored the collaboration among generations of growers and new wineries that continues to shape the region’s reputation.

For those looking to explore the Finger Lakes, the Wine Enthusiast Tasting Room Directory provides a comprehensive resource, featuring over 100 participating wineries and detailed wine trail connections. Visitors can also discover the area’s rich heritage through the established wine trails on Cayuga Lake, Seneca Lake, Keuka Lake, and Canandaigua Lake.

As the Finger Lakes continues to thrive, its legacy of resilience and cooperation remains a testament to the power of community in crafting exceptional wines. The region’s recognition as the 2025 American Wine Region of the Year not only honors its past but also paves the way for its future in the global wine arena.
