UPDATE: Figma CEO Dylan Field has confirmed that the company’s AI tools will not replace the work of elite designers. In a revealing interview on the Rapid Response podcast with host Bob Safian, Field emphasized that while Figma’s innovations will enhance design capabilities, they will not substitute for the creative expertise of top talent.
Field’s comments come on the heels of Figma’s blockbuster IPO in July 2023, where the company raised an impressive $1.2 billion and saw shares open at triple their asking price. The San Francisco-based design platform is renowned for its tools that facilitate the creation of websites, apps, and other digital products.
During the podcast, Field articulated that Figma’s AI features are designed to “raise the ceiling” for designers, allowing them to accomplish more while simultaneously “lowering the floor” to make design accessible to a broader audience. “Ultimately, all of us humans expect more from AI than we expect from a human,” he stated, emphasizing the importance of precision in AI’s execution of simple commands.
Field was clear about AI’s limitations, saying, “I’m not saying that we have to do the work of a world-class designer, because we won’t. There’s a need for designers to lead the charge, and AI will only get you so far.” He added that the focus should be on eradicating the monotonous tasks from the design workflow, enabling more individuals to participate in creative processes.
Figma’s success and the recent IPO celebration, which featured a block party complete with free pizza and a DJ in front of the New York Stock Exchange, underscore the company’s rapid growth and the rising interest in design technology.

Earlier this year, Canva cofounder Cliff Obrecht shared similar insights, arguing that AI should be seen as a tool to enhance designers’ capabilities rather than a replacement.
