A new wellness boutique, Fen & Hallow, opened its doors in San Marcos, offering a curated selection of holistic products and artisan gifts. Located at 165 S Guadalupe St. Ste. 112, the store aims to provide a calming atmosphere where visitors can explore natural wellness solutions.
Owner Heather Van Eck, who previously spent 15 years in the cosmetology industry, realized her passion for clean and intentional products during her personal wellness journey. After a brief hiatus during the COVID-19 pandemic to care for her children, she felt a strong desire to contribute to the community. “Serving others is where you’ll find the most fulfillment,” Van Eck stated.
Creating a Serene Space
Fen & Hallow embodies tranquility, with every detail designed to promote a sense of calm. Van Eck has carefully selected a range of products, including fair trade coffee, organic teas, handmade gifts, and clean beauty items. This thoughtful curation aims to create a “sacred oasis” where customers can reconnect with themselves.
The location of Fen & Hallow is intentional, situated on the quieter east side of downtown San Marcos. This allows it to serve as a peaceful retreat from the bustling Saturday morning Farmers Market or as a comforting spot after a long day. Van Eck expressed her appreciation for the unique charm of San Marcos, noting that the town fosters a supportive environment for small businesses.
Building Community Connections
Fen & Hallow’s name holds significance, drawing inspiration from the natural world. A fen represents a green space in Europe where wildlife thrives, while “hallow” refers to something sacred. This connection to nature reflects Van Eck’s vision for her boutique, as she aims to create a nurturing environment.
The store has quickly established itself as a community hub, hosting events and supporting local initiatives. Within just two months of opening, Fen & Hallow sponsored the Queer Festival, Lavender Spaces, and has plans to host local authors for book signings, with an upcoming event scheduled for July 19, 2023. Van Eck’s commitment to collaboration extends to partnerships with local businesses and nonprofits, fostering a sense of unity in the community.
“I want this to be a welcoming melting pot,” Van Eck said. “When one is doing well, we all do well. I want to put that energy out for others.”
Fen & Hallow invites patrons to visit from Tuesday to Sunday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.. For those unable to visit in person, the store offers online shopping at fenandhallow.com and is active on Instagram at @fenandhallow.
With its focus on wellness and community, Fen & Hallow stands poised to become a cherished spot in San Marcos, where individuals can find a moment of peace and connection.
