FedEx has announced plans to deploy an autonomous trailer unloader named Scoop, developed by Berkshire Grey, in 2026. This innovative technology aims to enhance efficiency and safety within the company’s parcel shipping network. The robotic system is designed specifically to tackle the demanding task of unloading trailers, a process that has historically posed significant challenges within parcel hubs.
Scoop is capable of identifying and managing various package types, ensuring a consistent flow of inbound deliveries. Once it empties trailers, the system autonomously exits, streamlining operations and reducing the physical strain on workers. “By using smart technologies for trailer unloading, we are equipping our workforce with cutting-edge technology, ultimately enhancing safety and improving operational efficiency—all while maintaining the high service standards our customers expect,” stated Kawal Preet, Executive Vice President of Planning, Engineering and Transformation at FedEx.
The company is currently in the final stages of a pilot program utilizing multiple Scoop units at one facility, although the specific location has not been disclosed. According to O.P. Skaaksrud, Vice President of Advanced Technology and Innovation at FedEx, the first production units are set to be operational later this year. “We are also targeting additional facilities for deployment in 2026,” Skaaksrud added, indicating the company’s commitment to expanding this technology across its network.
This initiative is part of a broader collaboration between FedEx and Berkshire Grey, which has spanned several years. In 2021, FedEx integrated Berkshire Grey’s Robotic Product Sortation and Identification systems to improve small package sorting. The following year, the two companies agreed to enhance artificial intelligence-driven robotic capabilities within FedEx’s package handling operations.
FedEx has been proactive in exploring robotics to optimize its logistics processes. Earlier in 2023, the company began testing AI-powered robots from Dexterity AI to improve loading efficiency within its trailers. Implementing robotics in such high-volume operations can significantly reduce package-handling costs and improve overall productivity.
Major competitors in the logistics sector, including UPS, Amazon, and Walmart, have also turned to robotics and technological solutions to alleviate the physical demands placed on employees and increase throughput. As FedEx moves forward with its autonomous unloading initiative, it continues to align its operations with the latest advancements in technology, setting a benchmark within the industry.
The deployment of Scoop underscores FedEx’s ongoing commitment to leveraging innovation in enhancing operational capabilities, ensuring that the company remains competitive in the ever-evolving logistics landscape.
