URGENT UPDATE: A federal judge has just BLOCKED President Donald Trump from deploying National Guard troops in Oregon, expanding a previous order aimed at halting troop movements. This decision comes after the administration attempted to send members from the California and Texas National Guard to Portland in an effort to bypass existing legal restrictions.
In a ruling issued late on Sunday, U.S. District Judge Karin Immergut affirmed the temporary restraining order initially set on Saturday, which prevented the deployment of Oregon National Guard troops. The new order now prohibits the president from deploying National Guard forces from ANY state to Oregon, reinforcing the court’s stance against circumventing legal directives.
California joined Oregon’s lawsuit against the Trump administration after the Pentagon sought to deploy 200 federalized California National Guard personnel from Los Angeles to Portland. This move was met with resistance as the state’s Governor, Gavin Newsom, announced victory on social media, stating: “We just won in court — again. A federal judge BLOCKED Donald Trump’s unlawful attempt to DEPLOY 300 OF OUR NATIONAL GUARD TROOPS TO PORTLAND.”
The Pentagon had also indicated plans to send Texas National Guard members to Portland and Chicago, a move approved by Texas Governor Greg Abbott. Judge Immergut questioned the administration’s attorney on how this action did not directly contravene her previous order.
The temporary restraining order will remain in effect until October 19, 2023. A telephone hearing is scheduled for October 17 to determine whether this order will be extended for an additional 14 days.
In response to the ruling, Oregon State Attorney General Dan Rayfield emphasized the significance of the decision on social media: “Late tonight, a federal judge issued a sweeping new order prohibiting the president from deploying National Guard forces—from any state or DC—to Oregon. The president can’t keep playing whack-a-mole with different states’ Guard units to get around court orders & the rule of law.”
The legal battle highlights ongoing tensions between state and federal authorities regarding troop deployments. The Trump administration has yet to comment on this significant ruling, leaving many to wonder how this will impact future military actions.
As developments unfold, all eyes will be on the upcoming court hearing, which could further shape the landscape of National Guard deployments across the country. Stay tuned for updates as this critical situation continues to evolve.
