UPDATE: The family of Daniel Waterman, a father-to-be, is speaking out after the tragic death of their loved one, who suffered severe injuries in an alleged intentional car crash in Flagler County, Florida. Waterman succumbed to his injuries on October 8, 2025, prompting authorities to charge his girlfriend, Leigha Mumby, with vehicular homicide.
Waterman, only 22 years old, was a passenger in the vehicle driven by Mumby, 24, when the crash occurred in February. He had been hospitalized for several months, recovering from critical injuries that included a broken neck, back, and multiple fractures. According to reports, just before the crash, Waterman told investigators that Mumby allegedly stated, “I don’t care what happens. You’ll get what you deserve.”
John Hager, attorney for Waterman’s family, expressed their sentiments, stating, “There are no real winners in this situation. It’s a terrible, horrible situation, and the fact that these charges were filed is right and just.” The family is reportedly “satisfied” with the police and prosecution’s efforts in Flagler County.
“Daniel passed away after courageously fighting for eight months from injuries sustained in a crash,” his obituary stated, highlighting his excitement for becoming a father.
Mumby was initially arrested in July 2025 and charged with reckless driving causing serious bodily injury and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. Following Waterman’s death, prosecutors upgraded the charges to vehicular homicide. She was booked into the Flagler County Jail but was released after posting a $150,000 bond.
In a poignant tribute, Waterman’s obituary described him as an enthusiastic soon-to-be father of a baby girl, emphasizing his love for basketball and the profound impact he had on those around him. “His strength, determination, and infectious energy left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him,” the obituary noted.
