UPDATE: A tragic shooting in Shrewsbury has left a father dead. Authorities have identified the victim as Kevin Doherty, aged 56, who was shot shortly after dropping off his 6-year-old child at school on July 27, 2023. The suspect, Snehal Ansh Srivasta, 26, was arrested following a massive police response.
The incident unfolded at approximately 8:50 a.m. near Jordan Pond, where Doherty confronted Srivasta, who was reportedly spray-painting near the pond. According to Shrewsbury Police Chief Kevin Anderson, Doherty called 911 to report an altercation, but moments later, gunshots were heard over the line.
Witnesses report that the confrontation escalated after Doherty attempted to take a photograph of Srivasta. While police raced to the scene, the dispatcher lost contact with Doherty after the gunfire erupted. When officers arrived, they found him with multiple gunshot wounds and he was subsequently transported to UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester, where he unfortunately succumbed to his injuries.
Immediately following the shooting, Srivasta fled the scene, prompting a large-scale manhunt involving local police and state authorities. According to a press release from the Shrewsbury Police Department, teams from Auburn, Boylston, Grafton, Northborough, and Massachusetts State Police joined the search.
Authorities located Srivasta shortly afterward inside a nearby home at 29 Edgewater Ave., where he surrendered after negotiations with the State Police Tactical Operations Team. This residence is reportedly covered in various spray-painted slogans, including “Ganga Gardens” and “Free Palestine.”
As the investigation continues, police executed a search warrant at the property. Notably, officials confirmed that Srivasta did not possess a license to carry a firearm.
This shocking incident has rocked the Shrewsbury community, raising urgent questions about safety and gun control. Local authorities are urging anyone with additional information to come forward as they continue to gather evidence.
