UPDATE: A fatal traffic accident occurred in St. Petersburg on December 27, 2025, at approximately 9:30 p.m. at the intersection of N Frontage Road and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Street North. Authorities report that a high-speed collision between two vehicles has resulted in one death and multiple injuries.
According to investigators, a silver Mitsubishi Outlander was traveling northbound on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Street North when it entered the intersection on a steady green signal. A blue Dodge Charger, driven by 31-year-old Izell Shelby of St. Petersburg, was moving westbound on N Frontage Road at a dangerously high speed and failed to stop for a red light. The Charger collided with the Mitsubishi, leading to tragic consequences.
Shelby was found heavily entrapped in his vehicle and was transported to Orlando Health Bayfront Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The driver of the Mitsubishi and her three passengers were also taken to the hospital, but fortunately, all sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
Just prior to the crash, an officer from the St. Petersburg Police Department observed Shelby driving recklessly along Gandy Boulevard. The officer initiated a U-turn to pursue, but did not follow as Shelby struck another vehicle on Gandy Boulevard near WinDerby before continuing westbound, ultimately colliding with the Mitsubishi.
Authorities indicate that speed and the failure to use proper safety belts are likely contributing factors in this tragic accident. Investigators revealed that Shelby had an active warrant and was driving with a suspended license, stemming from a previous court appearance for a driving-related offense.
The investigation into the crash is ongoing, and officials are urging anyone with information to come forward. This incident highlights the urgent need for road safety and adherence to traffic laws to prevent such devastating outcomes.
As authorities continue their investigation, the community mourns the loss of life and reflects on the importance of safe driving practices. Stay tuned for further updates as this story develops.
