In Midlothian, Virginia, a family is raising concerns about the sale of kratom, an imported substance with opioid-like effects, in local corner stores. Eight years ago, Cameron Francis, then a 22-year-old student at Liberty University, discovered kratom while searching for an alternative to alcohol. Initially attracted by its reputation as a harmless option for socializing, Francis now regrets his decision.

Francis, a dedicated athlete known for his participation in cross-country events, often felt pressure to fit in during social gatherings. His girlfriend, who abstained from alcohol, encouraged him to seek alternatives. “That’s where I came across kratom,” Francis told The Epoch Times.

Kratom, derived from a tropical evergreen tree, is known for its stimulant and sedative properties, depending on the dosage. While some users report that it enhances mood and increases energy, the substance is not without risks. Francis’s experience reflects a growing concern among families and health professionals regarding its safety and accessibility.

Health Risks and Growing Concerns

The dangers associated with kratom have prompted warnings from various health organizations. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has classified it as a substance of concern due to its potential for addiction and adverse health effects. According to the FDA, kratom has been linked to numerous cases of severe illness and even fatalities.

Francis’s story is one of many highlighting the substance’s troubling impact. He describes how his initial use led to a dependency that affected his academic performance and personal relationships. “I was in a downward spiral,” he recalls. Despite its availability in stores, Francis believes that consumers are not adequately informed about the risks.

“People think it’s safe because it’s sold at corner stores,” he explained. “They don’t realize that just because it’s legal doesn’t mean it’s safe.”

In recent years, there has been a notable increase in kratom use among young adults, often fueled by the perception that it is a natural and harmless alternative to traditional drugs. The growing market for kratom has led to its widespread availability, often without sufficient regulation or oversight.

Call for Increased Regulation

Families like Francis’s are advocating for stricter regulations on kratom sales. They argue that more stringent measures are necessary to protect young people from the substance’s risks. Various advocacy groups are pushing for legislation that would require clear labeling and health warnings on kratom products.

In addition, some states have begun to take action. For instance, states such as Arizona and Georgia have implemented bans or restrictions on kratom sales. However, the substance remains legal in many areas, complicating efforts to curb its use.

“People deserve to know what they are putting into their bodies,” Francis stated. His family hopes that by sharing his story, they can help raise awareness and prevent others from experiencing similar struggles.

As the debate over kratom continues, individuals and families are encouraged to educate themselves about the substance and its potential effects. With growing attention to the issue, the hope is that more comprehensive regulations will be put in place to safeguard public health.
