The Lancaster-Lebanon League‘s Section 2 is poised for an exciting showdown as Exeter and Conestoga Valley prepare to face off in Week 9 of the upcoming football season. Last year’s clash between these two undefeated teams culminated in a thrilling finish that ultimately determined the section champion. Conestoga Valley emerged victorious with a narrow 28-27 win over Exeter, followed by a decisive 52-22 victory against Muhlenberg, securing their first section title since 2006.

In that intense matchup, Exeter trailed 28-21 in the fourth quarter, only to rally back with a late touchdown reception from Jayden Ware. However, their two-point conversion attempt fell short, leaving them just shy of victory. The following month, Exeter avenged the loss in the District 3 Class 5A semifinals, dominating Conestoga Valley with a 48-14 win.

Top Contenders Ready for Action

Both teams are set to return a wealth of talent in the upcoming season. Conestoga Valley, boasting an impressive 11-1 record last year, will rely on their standout senior quarterback Sawyer Esbenshade and wide receiver Josiah Garcia. Esbenshade threw for 2,078 yards and 25 touchdowns last season, while also contributing 419 rushing yards and six scores. Garcia’s versatility was evident as he amassed 289 receiving yards and played a key role in the ground game.

Despite losing key players, including the Wide Receiver of the Year Jayden Johnson and Defensive Back of the Year Isaiah Sensenig, Coach Jon Scepanski remains optimistic about Conestoga Valley’s prospects. “They’re going to be good again this year, too, regardless of the people that they lost,” said Rob Flowers, head coach of Muhlenberg.

On the other hand, Exeter comes off a stellar 12-2 season. They fell short in both the Section 2 race and the District 3 Class 5A championship against eventual state champions, Bishop McDevitt. With many key players returning, including senior quarterback Riley Martinez and star receiver Jayden Ware, Exeter is determined to make another deep postseason run.

Challenges Ahead for Other Teams

Several other teams are eager to challenge the dominance of Exeter and Conestoga Valley. Ephrata, with a record of 6-4, aims to bounce back after a disappointing previous season. Gov. Mifflin and Muhlenberg also look to improve after struggling last year, finishing 5-6 and 4-7, respectively. Ephrata’s standout linebacker Chase Prange, who recorded 117 tackles last season, is expected to play a crucial role in their resurgence.

New quarterback LeBron Leaf at Gov. Mifflin will need to step up after the team lost several key players to graduation. Despite predictions placing them low in the standings, Coach Nick Morrissey is embracing the underdog role. “We’re excited. We are definitely loving taking on this underdog role. That’s new for us,” he remarked.

The 2025 season promises to be competitive, particularly with Exeter and Conestoga Valley expected to vie for the title once again. As teams gear up for the season, fans can anticipate thrilling matchups and a showcase of emerging talent across the league.
