Joseph Daniel Korshalla, an accomplished microbiologist and a resident of Weatherly, Pennsylvania, passed away on the morning of December 9, 2025, at the age of 89. His contributions to the field of microbiology and his passion for the outdoors defined a life dedicated to both science and nature.
Born on April 12, 1936, in Larksville, Pennsylvania, to Joseph and Anna (Petroski) Korshalla, Joseph pursued higher education with vigor. He earned a Bachelor of Science in biology from Kings College in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, in 1958, followed by a Master of Science in microbiology from St. John’s University in Jamaica, New York, in 1960. His professional career included significant roles at Lederle Laboratories, American Cyanamid, and Pfizer in Pearl River, New York. Joseph specialized in the research and development of novel antibiotic compounds, focusing on their scale-up for industrial manufacturing.
In addition to his scientific achievements, Joseph was a passionate fly-fisherman, known for crafting his own flies and frequently exploring freshwater streams in the Catskills and Poconos of New York and Pennsylvania. His creativity extended to gardening and watercolor painting, with his artwork cherished by family and friends.
Joseph was also deeply committed to his community. In his later years, he actively participated in charitable efforts, providing transportation for elderly and disabled individuals to medical appointments. This dedication to service reflected his caring nature and desire to give back.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his beloved wife, Jean Hayes Korshalla, and his sister, Mary Danielle Korshalla. He is survived by his daughter, Lauren E. Korshalla, who resides in Houston, Texas, and his sister, Anne (Korshalla) King, along with her husband, Bernard King, both of whom live in Dallas, Pennsylvania.
