Speedskater Erin Jackson and bobsledder Frank Del Duca have been named the U.S. flagbearers for the opening ceremony of the Milan Cortina Olympics on February 6, 2026. This announcement, made by the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee on Tuesday, highlights the significant achievements of both athletes in their respective sports.

Jackson, who made history as the first Black woman to win an individual gold medal at a Winter Olympics, expressed her pride in this honor. “Being chosen to represent the United States on the world stage is a tremendous honor,” she stated. “It’s a moment that reflects far more than one individual—it represents my family, my teammates, my hometown, and everyone across the country who believes in the power of sport.”

Del Duca, a sergeant in the Army, is particularly honored to carry the flag as he has deep Italian roots. “With the Olympic Games being held in Italy, it means even more,” he remarked. “Nearly everyone in my family is of Italian descent. There is no greater honor than leading Team USA into the Opening Ceremony in Italy. It feels like a bridge between my family’s heritage and the country I’m so proud to serve.”

Historic Achievements and Team Representation

The selection of Jackson and Del Duca comes from a vote among their fellow Team USA athletes. This event marks Jackson’s third Olympic participation and Del Duca’s second. Jackson’s appointment makes her the eighth U.S. speedskater to take on this prestigious role, while Del Duca becomes the sixth bobsledder to do so.

The opening ceremony is expected to be unique, with events spread across several cities in Italy. This logistical approach aims to enhance the connection between the games and the Italian culture.

This year’s ceremony will be a significant moment for Team USA, especially following the challenges faced during the previous Winter Olympics in Beijing. U.S. bobsledder Elana Meyers Taylor was initially chosen to carry the American flag in the 2022 opening ceremony but tested positive for COVID-19, which led to her replacement by speedskater Brittany Bowe. This time, Jackson will have the chance to showcase her leadership on behalf of the United States.

Both Jackson and Del Duca’s selections signify a celebration of diversity and representation within the Olympic movement. They embody the spirit of perseverance that defines Olympic athletes worldwide. As the countdown to the Milan Cortina Olympics continues, these flagbearers stand as symbols of hope and inspiration for their teammates and fans alike.
