Erie County has initiated the distribution of full SNAP EBT benefits, effective as of November 13, 2023. According to county executive Mark Poloncarz, state officials confirmed that this distribution will continue through Monday, November 17, 2023. Approximately 96% of SNAP households in Erie County are set to receive 100% of their authorized benefits during this period.

Legal Compliance and Consumer Rights

Letitia James, the Attorney General of New York, has issued a warning to retailers, emphasizing the importance of complying with SNAP regulations. She stated, “The balances on consumers’ EBT cards must be accepted by SNAP retailers.” Failure to honor these benefits is categorized as “illegal denial” by Attorney General James. Her office has committed to addressing all complaints regarding non-compliance.

The announcement comes as the Trump administration has renewed its appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court to maintain a freeze on full SNAP payments. In light of this situation, James expressed concern about potential illegal denials at the retail level. “As New Yorkers begin to receive their full benefits this week, I fear we could begin to see this illegal denial to honor SNAP,” she said. Her office, along with 25 other attorneys general and governors, filed a lawsuit on October 28 to protect SNAP benefits.

Community Response and Support Initiatives

The community in Western New York is experiencing significant challenges. Franchelle Parker from Open Buffalo highlighted the urgent needs within the community, stating, “We’ve obtained an emergency distribution of $130,000. It may sound like a large amount, but with the hurt and despair in this community, it’s peanuts.” Open Buffalo is collaborating with a network of churches across the east side of Buffalo, Niagara Falls, and Lackawanna to ensure food pantries are stocked, as reports indicate that many are running out of supplies.

In addition, Lenny Lane of the FATHERS organization announced a community initiative to collect donations. Blue beacon of hope bins will be placed at various firehouses and businesses throughout the city, encouraging residents to contribute canned goods and non-perishable items.

The rollout of full SNAP benefits in Erie County comes at a critical time, as many families in the region continue to navigate economic hardships. Local leaders and organizations are actively working to ensure that residents receive the support they need during this challenging period.
