UPDATE: Emilio Pagán has officially re-signed with the Cincinnati Reds as their closer, finalizing a $20 million, two-year contract just announced on Thursday. Pagán, who became a standout for the team last season, expressed that the decision to stay was an “easy choice” despite exploring other options in free agency.

The 34-year-old right-hander delivered an impressive performance last season, finishing with a 2.88 ERA and achieving a career-high 32 saves in 38 chances. His remarkable skills helped the Reds clinch the National League’s final wild-card spot, ending the season at 83-79 under new management. “I like everything that we’ve got going on here,” Pagán stated. “I wanted to go somewhere where I felt comfortable, where I felt like I had a chance to win games and be around a special group of people, and Cincinnati checks all three of those boxes.”

Pagán’s contract includes the option to opt-out after the 2026 season, offering him flexibility moving forward. As one of the more experienced players in a young pitching rotation, he will play a crucial mentoring role alongside rising stars like Hunter Greene, Andrew Abbott, and Nick Lodolo.

Looking to enhance his game, Pagán aims to utilize his split-finger fastball more effectively this coming season. He noted, “The splitter has, in my opinion, changed the way that I can attack both left-handed and right-handed hitters.” With his commitment to improvement, Reds fans can expect even more from their closer in the upcoming season.

As the offseason progresses, the Reds are building momentum, and Pagán’s return solidifies their strategy for the next two years. Stay tuned for more updates as the Reds prepare for a promising season ahead.
