BREAKING: Elyria High School’s boys basketball team stunned Avon with a decisive 78-64 victory on January 16, 2023, ending the Eagles’ impressive seven-game winning streak. This win is pivotal in the ongoing Southwestern Conference (SWC) title race as the Pioneers rebound from a recent loss.

Elyria jumped out to a stunning 19-4 lead right from the start, showcasing their determination after a disappointing loss to Berea-Midpark just days earlier. Pioneers’ guard Tink Shelton stated, “We still had a nasty taste in our mouth from the last loss, and we felt like that was not us. We wanted to come out and show them that we are still No. 1 in this conference.”

The Pioneers’ defense was relentless, preventing Avon from scoring for the first four minutes of the game. Coach Brett Larrick emphasized the focus and intensity displayed by his team, remarking that it was their most concentrated performance across all areas. Elyria extended their lead to 44-21 by halftime, dominating the game.

Despite the injury of key player Jermiah Daniels in the first half, Elyria maintained control. Daniels suffered an ankle injury but encouraged his teammates to keep pushing forward. Shelton noted, “Jermiah is a big piece of our team. When he went down, he told us to keep playing.”

Avon struggled to respond effectively, with Coach Mike Fitch admitting, “We were not ready to go… Elyria brought intention and physicality, and we backed down.” The Eagles, who were previously tied with Elyria and Olmsted Falls at 4-2 in the SWC, fell to 9-2 (4-3 SWC) with this defeat.

Elyria’s balanced scoring attack included standout performances from Rondel Grimmett (15 points), Cam Bell (13 points), Seth Wilkerson (12 points), and Kendyll Compton (17 points, 8 rebounds). Grimmett shone in the second half, turning a quiet first half into a commanding performance, stating, “You see what happens when that doesn’t happen. We had a great game.”

With this victory, the Pioneers improved to 10-3 (5-2 SWC), putting them back in contention for the conference title. The loss was a significant setback for Avon, marking their first defeat in almost a month.

Looking ahead, Elyria is set to face Olmsted Falls again on December 20 after previously losing to them. Avon will host North Ridgeville on January 20, determined to bounce back.

“This is just one loss. It is basketball. You lose games,” Fitch reflected. “We are still 9-2, and we still have a game Tuesday against a team that we already beat. You have to forget it, watch film, and learn from it.”

As the SWC season progresses, both teams will be eager to make their mark. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.
