UPDATE: Ellen DeGeneres has confirmed that her decision to move to the UK with wife Portia de Rossi was directly influenced by President Donald Trump’s reelection. Speaking during an onstage conversation with British host Richard Bacon in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, on Sunday, DeGeneres revealed that their initial two-month stay has turned into a permanent relocation.
“We got here the day before the election and woke up to lots of texts from our friends with crying emojis,” DeGeneres recalled. “And I was like, ‘He got in.’ And we’re like, ‘We’re staying here.’” Their move became official last November after Trump defeated Democratic nominee Kamala Harris, and they now reside in a newly purchased home in the picturesque Cotswolds.
DeGeneres expressed her delight with rural life in England, saying, “It’s absolutely beautiful. We’re just not used to seeing this kind of beauty. The villages and the towns and the architecture — everything you see is charming and it’s just a simpler way of life.” She emphasized the cultural differences, stating, “Everything here is just better — the way animals are treated, people are polite. I just love it here.”
In a surprising twist, DeGeneres hinted at a potential second wedding in the UK. The couple, who originally tied the knot in August 2008 in Los Angeles, may consider re-marrying as a response to threats against LGBTQ+ rights in the U.S. “The Baptist Church in America is trying to reverse gay marriage,” she explained. “Portia and I are already looking into it, and if they do that, we’re going to get married here.”
DeGeneres, who is now 67, also shared her thoughts on the need for greater acceptance in society. “I wish we were at a place where it was not scary for people to be who they are,” she added.
As for her career, DeGeneres hinted at a potential return to show business but clarified it would not be in the form of her previous talk show. “I just don’t know what that is yet,” she said, expressing a desire for fun and new experiences, even while enjoying her life with animals on their farm.
In March, DeGeneres and de Rossi sold their beach bungalow in Montecito, California, for a staggering $5.2 million. She has been sharing glimpses of her new farmhouse lifestyle, including a recent change in hair color to brunette. Notably, DeGeneres extended her support to fellow comedian Rosie O’Donnell after Trump threatened her citizenship, showcasing her commitment to standing up for fellow artists.
As DeGeneres and de Rossi establish their lives in England, the couple’s story resonates with many who seek refuge amid political uncertainty. The move marks a significant moment in their lives, reflecting broader themes of acceptance and love in a changing world.
