The Rotary Club of Elizabethton dedicated a new Peace Pole at Harmon Park, marking a significant moment for the local community and its commitment to global peace. The ceremony took place adjacent to the park’s Rotary Pavilion, where members gathered to celebrate this important installation.
Acting President Bill Anderson led the dedication ceremony, highlighting that since World War II, over 250,000 Peace Poles have been erected in nearly every country worldwide. These poles serve as symbols of hope and unity, standing “in silent prayer for peace on earth.”
The Elizabethton Peace Pole is an impressive structure, measuring over six feet tall. Each of its four sides features the message, “May Peace Prevail on Earth,” displayed in four languages: English, French, German, and Spanish. Anderson concluded the ceremony with a prayer, stating, “May this Peace Pole be an inspiration to all who encounter it to seek to be peacemakers in both their public and personal lives.”
Community Leaders Attend Dedication Ceremony
The dedication ceremony also saw the attendance of local officials, including Richard Barker and Debbie Gouge from the City Council. Additionally, Gary McAllister, the Rotary District 7570 Area Governor from Johnson City, was present to lend his support.
Former Rotary Club President Charlene Ray played a pivotal role in bringing the project to fruition and expressed her gratitude to the city’s Parks and Recreation Department for overseeing the installation. Following the ceremony, Ray, who has recently transitioned to the Rotary Club of Bristol TN/VA, was recognized for her dedicated service to both the club and the community during a catered dinner at the Rotary Pavilion.
Symbol of Hope for Elizabethton
Community members view the Peace Pole as a vital addition to Harmon Park, reinforcing the message of peace and unity amid global challenges. The initiative aligns with the broader goals of the Rotary organization, which emphasizes community service and international goodwill.
As Elizabethton embraces this new symbol of hope, the Peace Pole stands as a reminder for residents and visitors alike to strive for peace in their everyday lives, fostering a spirit of cooperation and understanding. The dedication at Harmon Park marks a hopeful new chapter for the community, one that underscores the importance of collective efforts in promoting global harmony.
