Duke Nicholson, grandson of Hollywood legend Jack Nicholson, is making his mark in the film industry with his first leading role in the crime thriller The Deputy. Directed by Matt Sukkar, the film is based on the novel by Victor Gischler and features a notable cast, including William H. Macy and Tiffany Haddish. The film’s international sales were launched at the Cannes Film Festival and it is set to debut at festivals in 2026.

Over the past decade, the 26-year-old actor has navigated the industry while developing his unique artistic vision. Despite his family ties, Duke did not initially envision a career in film. He explained, “My interest in film was definitely there, but I didn’t really think about it as a career path until I was probably 15 or 16.” His initial focus was on directing, but peer encouragement during high school film classes led him to explore acting.

Duke’s relationship with Sukkar, who was his roommate, proved pivotal. The two met at the Sundance Film Festival while supporting friends’ projects. After living together for two years in a creatively stimulating environment they dubbed the “Boat House,” Sukkar presented Duke with the script for The Deputy. The gritty narrative resonated with Duke, who appreciated its chaotic, one-night-in-the-city feel reminiscent of Martin Scorsese‘s After Hours.

In The Deputy, Duke plays Toby Sawyer, a part-time lawman thrust into a chaotic situation when he is tasked with guarding a body that mysteriously disappears. He described the role as a coming-of-age story for a character unprepared for the challenges he faces. “It’s one of those stories where someone who’s not equipped for a situation gets thrown into it, and you watch them grow and figure things out,” he noted.

During the interview, Duke reflected on his grandfather’s influence and advice. While Jack did not provide specific guidance for this project, he has consistently emphasized the importance of creating one’s own material. “He’s always been more than an actor; he’s a writer and director, too,” Duke said. This philosophy has inspired Duke to take an active role in his creative journey, reinforcing his desire to develop original projects alongside acting.

Duke’s admiration for his grandfather’s work is evident. He cites The Passenger, directed by Michelangelo Antonioni, as particularly influential. He stated, “I’ve seen almost all his films. I mean, he’s incredible.” The two maintain a close relationship, with Duke frequently visiting Jack.

As he embarks on this new chapter, Duke is also focused on his own writing. He is nearing completion of a script he intends to direct. “John Cassavetes is my biggest hero,” he mentioned, revealing his aspirations to act in the films he directs.

In addition to his film pursuits, Duke gained attention for featuring on the cover of Lana Del Rey‘s album Norman Fucking Rockwell!. While he occasionally models, he expressed that it is not his primary passion. “I spend most of my time watching movies, going to theaters around L.A.,” he shared, emphasizing his dedication to film culture.

Duke Nicholson’s journey reflects a blend of heritage and individuality. As he embraces his first leading role in The Deputy, he is poised to carve out his own legacy within the film industry while honoring the artistic spirit of his grandfather.
