A dramatic collision involving a suspected drunk driver on the I-15 in Escondido resulted in multiple injuries and a vehicle engulfed in flames on July 7, 2023. The incident took place around 18:26 local time, specifically at the northbound Interstate 15 on-ramp to eastbound State Route 78.

According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the driver of an SUV was traveling at speeds exceeding 100 miles per hour when the accident occurred. The SUV veered off course, crossing the area between the roadway and the SR-78 on-ramp, before colliding with a Jeep. This impact caused the Jeep to roll over and catch fire.

In the aftermath of the crash, two occupants of the Jeep were rescued by a good Samaritan and subsequently transported to a hospital with minor injuries. The driver of the SUV, along with a child passenger, also sustained minor injuries and were taken to the hospital, accompanied by a police officer.

Following medical treatment, the driver of the SUV was arrested on charges of felony DUI and later booked into the Vista Detention Facility. The CHP’s swift response to the scene helped manage the chaotic situation, which brought traffic to a standstill as emergency services worked to extinguish the flames and assist the injured.

This incident highlights ongoing concerns regarding reckless driving and the dangers associated with driving under the influence. Authorities continue to remind the public of the severe consequences that can arise from impaired driving behaviors.
