A DUI and driver’s license checkpoint conducted by the Chula Vista Police Department on the evening of October 27, 2023, resulted in significant law enforcement activity. The checkpoint, strategically placed in the 1000 block of Third Avenue, operated from 18:00 to 23:00 and aimed to enhance road safety by targeting impaired drivers.
During the operation, police arrested two drivers for driving under the influence of alcohol. In addition to the arrests, officers impounded five vehicles and issued a total of 28 citations. The checkpoint saw a substantial volume of traffic, with a total of 2,763 vehicles passing through it. Out of these, 774 vehicles were screened by officers, leading to five drivers undergoing field sobriety tests.
According to the Chula Vista Police Department, a significant portion of the citations issued—20 out of 28—were attributed to unlicensed or suspended licenses. The department emphasized that the locations for DUI checkpoints are determined based on reported incidents of impaired driving-related crashes in the area, reflecting a proactive approach to reducing such incidents.
The checkpoint is part of broader efforts to ensure road safety and deter impaired driving, which poses risks to all road users.
