UPDATE: The annual MLK Classic at Monroe High School delivered thrilling basketball action today, featuring intense matchups that ended with Dougherty edging out Valdosta 46-44 and Monroe defeating Early County 68-58. The event showcased competitive spirit and resilience, captivating fans and players alike.

The day’s schedule was slightly disrupted when the anticipated game between Lee County and Bible Baptist (Statesboro) was canceled due to transportation issues. Despite this setback, Monroe head coach Michael Hoffpauir expressed satisfaction with the day’s events, stating, “The day went well. I think we had great matchups that made each game competitive.”

The festivities began with the girls’ games, setting the tone for the boys’ matches that followed. In the opener, Dougherty showcased their skill against Valdosta. After a competitive first quarter, Dougherty held a narrow 14-13 lead. The Trojans surged in the second quarter, with standout performances from Mikel Roberts, who hit multiple three-pointers, and freshman Ernest Townsell, helping to build a significant lead of 29-18 at halftime.

As the second half unfolded, Dougherty extended their lead to 36-18, but Valdosta responded fiercely. A series of nine unanswered points brought Valdosta back into contention, tying the game at 42-42 with just over three minutes remaining. However, Dougherty’s David Burgess hit a crucial shot to regain the lead, sealing the game with a free throw and securing their victory.

Eight players contributed to Dougherty’s scoring, with Roberts leading the charge with 10 points. The Trojans improved their season record to 8-9 with this hard-fought win.

Later in the day, Monroe closed out the boys’ portion of the event with a commanding 68-58 victory over Early County. The Golden Tornadoes established an early advantage with a 14-4 lead after the first quarter. Tristen Terry was instrumental, igniting the second quarter with a three-pointer followed by a steal and layup, bringing the score to 19-4.

Despite their significant lead, Monroe faced persistent pressure from Early County, who fought back with aggressive full-court defense. However, Monroe consistently responded, with Brayden Burns leading their scoring with an impressive 26 points and Terry contributing 17 points. Early County’s top scorer, Tre Lee, managed 15 points, but it was not enough to overcome the Golden Tornadoes’ efforts.

Despite the earlier cancellation, the MLK Classic proved to be a resounding success, showcasing talent and determination on the court. Fans left the gym buzzing with excitement for future matchups as both teams look to build on their performances.

As the tournament continues, all eyes will be on the next set of games, with anticipation building for more thrilling action in the remaining days of the MLK Classic.
