URGENT UPDATE: Donner Ski Ranch in Norden, California, has officially opened for the ski season following significant setbacks from late snow and power outages caused by a recent winter storm. Just a week ago, the resort’s landscape resembled a dry construction site, but thanks to timely snowfall, skiers can now hit the slopes.

Resort operations manager Amelia Powell reported, “We were waiting for the snow right from the beginning of November.” The journey to opening day was fraught with challenges, including a power outage lasting over three days that necessitated the replacement of a high-voltage line.

Ski enthusiast Michael Carpol from Walnut Creek had been eagerly monitoring conditions before his planned trip. “I was looking at the webcam for this place and it was a complete brown dirt lot,” he remarked, highlighting the dramatic transformation now that snow blankets the area.

General manager Davis Bedient acknowledged the difficult start to the season, saying, “It’s definitely been a crazy start. Just a week ago it was all dirt here.” However, with the arrival of snow, the atmosphere has shifted dramatically.

The community is embracing the family-friendly environment of Donner Ski Ranch. Carpol, who appreciates the resort’s laid-back vibe, noted, “There’s a handful of lifts and you can see each other very well. It’s just a great opportunity.”

For Anna Roche from Mill Valley, the resort holds nostalgic value. “It’s very nostalgic. Like the good old times of skiing, where it’s all about the mountain and not the glitz,” she shared, emphasizing the emotional connection many families have with the resort.

Looking ahead, Bedient expressed hope for favorable weather, stating, “Hopefully just a little bit of rain and then a lot of snow and next week a lot more sunny days for people to get out and ski.”

Despite overcast skies and softening snow, local skier Josh Calawejer from Santa Cruz found the conditions ideal for family outings. “Even though it’s overcast and the snow’s gotten kind of soft because it’s warm, it’s perfect conditions for the family,” he said, reflecting the joy and excitement surrounding the ski season.

As families flock to the slopes in search of winter fun, the opening of Donner Ski Ranch serves as a reminder of the resilience of local businesses in the face of adversity.
