Calm Companionship: English Mastiffs
The second breed Atherton recommends is the English Mastiff. He expresses a desire to work with more of these dogs, describing them as one of the best breeds available. Atherton highlights their innate chill demeanor, stating that they “come out of the womb just wanting to be a chill, laid-back, perfect canine companion.”
The PDSA notes that English Mastiffs are calm, good-natured dogs that typically get along well with others. They require at least one hour of exercise daily, but caution is advised regarding the intensity of exercise for puppies, as their joints are still developing. Cavaliers: The Family-Friendly Choice
Atherton’s final recommendation is the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, which he regards as one of the best small breeds. He suggests that if more people opted for Cavaliers over more demanding breeds like cocker spaniels or Jack Russells, they would avoid unnecessary challenges.
The PDSA supports this view, stating that Cavaliers are excellent family dogs known for their friendly nature and compatibility with children. These dogs typically require 45 minutes to an hour of exercise each day, making them a suitable choice for families with busy lifestyles.
