A recent survey has shown that the average dog owner makes an astonishing 27 decisions each month influenced by their pets. Conducted by Talker Research on behalf of Darwin’s Pet Food, the study surveyed 2,000 dog owners to explore how their furry companions shape daily life.

The findings indicate that dog owners often adjust their social and work commitments to accommodate their pets. On average, they cancel social plans around four times per month and cut gatherings short six times in the same period. Additionally, many dog parents find themselves altering their work routines or locations—averaging 3.3 times monthly—to ensure their dogs are well cared for.

Insights from DINKWADs

The survey specifically examined a demographic known as DINKWADs—double income, no kids with a dog. The results revealed that 71% of DINKWAD respondents feel their lives revolve around their pets, compared to 61% of other dog owners. Over half of DINKWADs consider their dogs to be like children, with 63% expressing this sentiment, while 54% of other owners shared the same view.

Interestingly, DINKWADs are more likely to stay home if their dog appears lonely, with 57% admitting to doing so. Furthermore, 58% of DINKWADs have skipped social events simply because their dogs looked “too cute and comfy” to leave behind.

Gary Tashjian, founder and CEO of Darwin’s Pet Food, commented, “Our dogs are more than just pets; they shape every aspect of our lives. It’s clear that dog owners are deeply invested in the well-being of their furry companions.”

Financial Commitment to Pet Care

DINKWADs also demonstrate a significant financial commitment to their pets, spending an average of $172.60 more annually than other dog owners. Their budgets allocate approximately $194.60 for veterinary bills, $183.80 for food and essentials, and $128.60 for treats and toys.

The survey highlights that DINKWADs prioritize high-quality pet care, with 80% opting for premium food or treats. They show a keen interest in ingredient quality, with 80% checking ingredient lists and 66% considering a brand’s reputation before making purchases.

Moreover, DINKWADs are inclined to provide extra comforts for their dogs. Nearly half have multiple beds in different rooms, while significant percentages invest in personalized accessories and pet furniture.

When it comes to splurging, DINKWADs are more likely to spoil their pets than themselves. 41% of them indicated they would prioritize their dog over personal indulgences, particularly during special occasions. They celebrate their pets’ birthdays with favorite meals and outings, with 44% preparing special meals and 31% taking them on joyful excursions.

Tashjian remarked, “The results of the survey highlight just how invested this group of pet parents are. Their pets aren’t just animal companions—they’re family, and they’re willing to celebrate and spoil them accordingly.”

The survey was conducted online between March 20 and March 26, 2025, revealing a deep connection and commitment dog owners, particularly DINKWADs, have to their pets, shaping decisions in various aspects of their lives.
