Dmitri Atrash is campaigning for a position on the Thompson School Board, seeking to implement strategies that deliver tangible benefits for students. As one of two candidates for the District F seat, Atrash is in a race against Lori Goebel ahead of the election scheduled for November 4, 2024. He emphasizes the need for a focused approach to educational outcomes that prioritize the well-being and success of children within the district.
Atrash, a parent of two daughters enrolled in Thompson schools, brings a unique perspective shaped by his diverse background. His experience as a Navy veteran, combined with his career as a user experience designer and as a spouse of a TSD teacher, positions him to understand the complexities of educational environments. He believes his skills in listening, simplifying complex processes, and fostering collaboration are essential for the school board, especially in addressing the divisions that sometimes hinder progress.
Teacher Retention as a Priority
One of Atrash’s major concerns is the retention of quality educators, a critical factor in student success. He acknowledges that salaries in the Thompson School District lag behind those in neighboring districts like Poudre and St. Vrain, which necessitates competitive compensation packages. However, he argues that retention is not solely about pay; it also involves fostering a supportive culture within the school environment.
Atrash plans to advocate for policies that prioritize teacher input and reduce unnecessary burdens. He envisions creating opportunities for professional development and ensuring that teachers feel respected and valued. Through initiatives such as listening sessions, transparent communication, and robust mentoring programs, he aims to transform TSD into a destination district where educators are motivated to remain and thrive.
Financial Responsibility and Capital Projects
Addressing the district’s financial management, Atrash underscores the importance of balancing immediate needs with long-term fiscal responsibility. He supports the Strive 2025 plan, which emphasizes fiscal transparency and resource prioritization. For capital projects, Atrash believes in making data-driven decisions that consider factors such as student enrollment trends, safety requirements, and instructional needs.
He asserts that clear communication regarding costs, trade-offs, and timelines is vital for maintaining public trust. Atrash insists that every expenditure should connect back to enhancing student learning, whether through modernizing classrooms, ensuring safe facilities, or investing in technology that facilitates effective teaching.
Background and Community Engagement
At 41 years old, Atrash has spent the past three years in Loveland, Colorado, although he is originally from the state. He holds a bachelor’s degree in aviation technology from Metropolitan State College in Denver and a master’s degree in web design and development with a focus on human-computer interaction from the University of Denver. His professional career spans 12 years as a United States Navy officer and aviator, as well as roles in user experience design, including leading design initiatives at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) through Colorado State University.
While new to the political arena, Atrash has engaged with the community through volunteer work for nonprofits and coaching youth soccer teams. He is keen to leverage his experiences and insights in service to the Thompson School District and its students.
As the election date approaches, Atrash’s commitment to enhancing educational outcomes and fostering a supportive environment for both students and educators remains a central focus of his campaign.
