Detroit Metropolitan Airport has launched a unique initiative aimed at easing traveler stress by introducing a team of certified therapy dogs. The program, which began in 2022, features 29 therapy dogs, each partnered with one of 27 different handlers, who visit the airport at least twice a month. These furry companions are trained to provide comfort and joy to passengers navigating the often stressful travel environment.

Among the notable participants is Simba, a six-year-old golden retriever who has quickly become a favorite. His handler, Kim Watson, describes their routine, which includes a morning commute where Simba awakens excitedly to start his day at the airport. As they walk from the parking deck to the terminal, Simba interacts with travelers, handing out his trading cards and sharing a special treat known as a Pup Cup.

The therapy dog program is designed to enhance the overall customer experience at the airport. According to Roger Drabant, communications and external affairs programs administrator for the Wayne County Airport Authority, the goal is to reduce the stress associated with travel. “What better than dogs, really?” Drabant remarked, emphasizing the positive impact the dogs have on passengers and staff alike.

Welcoming Atmosphere for Travelers

The presence of therapy dogs has proven to be a hit among both passengers and employees. Matt Morawski, director of communications for the Wayne County Airport Authority, expressed gratitude for the volunteers, stating, “We’re so lucky to have them, their dedication and their passion. They bring so much joy to the airport every day.” This sentiment is echoed by John Palladino, who volunteers with two toy fox terriers. He describes the airport experience as the “most rewarding” of his week, highlighting the genuine connections formed when travelers engage with the dogs.

The airport’s initiative provides a unique setting for therapy dogs to interact with a diverse range of individuals. Watson noted that while she and Simba also visit hospitals and nursing homes, the airport allows them to connect with people from all over the world. “When I have Simba with me, I feel like I could do pretty much anything,” she shared.

Training and Certification of Therapy Dogs

Becoming a therapy dog is no small feat; it requires a specific personality and extensive training. According to Palladino, the certification process resembles the rigorous standards of professional schooling, involving a four-step examination. Dogs must demonstrate their ability to remain calm in various environments, from bustling airports to quieter public spaces. “If the dog is showing signs of enjoyment and capabilities of doing the work, then that’s fine,” he explained.

Organizations like The Fur Angels work closely with the airport to ensure that both dogs and their handlers are well-prepared for their roles. Training includes exposure to everyday situations, such as navigating busy stores and encountering unexpected noises. This preparation helps ensure that therapy dogs are ready to handle the unique challenges of the airport environment.

With the program being volunteer-based, there is no fixed schedule for when therapy dogs will be on-site. Volunteers commit to at least two days per month, but actual attendance may vary. The dogs typically work in two-hour segments, and handlers select which terminal to visit. The airport often updates its social media platforms regarding the dogs’ presence, making it easier for travelers to interact with them.

Each therapy dog in the program is easily identifiable by their vests and leashes, which signal that they are available for petting. Despite initial hesitance from some travelers, Palladino noted that once one person engages with a dog, others often follow suit. The experience is consistently positive, fostering a sense of appreciation for both the dogs and their handlers.

As the program continues to grow, the airport aims to expand its team of therapy dogs, hoping to have multiple pairs available each day. Certified dog and human pairs interested in joining the initiative can reach out via email to [email protected]. The success of this program highlights the profound impact that therapy dogs can have, transforming the airport experience into a more comforting and enjoyable journey for all.
