Derryfield High School secured a stunning victory against the previously undefeated Pembroke in the 2026 Division II Girls’ Basketball Championship, triumphing by a score of 57-41. The match, held on March 14, 2026, marked a significant moment for Derryfield, which improved its season record to 19-2.
Pembroke, the top-seeded team, entered the game boasting an impressive 20-0 record and aimed to claim its first state title since 1980. However, Derryfield’s determined performance revealed just how much the team had evolved since their earlier defeat to Pembroke at the start of the season.
Derryfield’s coach, Courtney Cheetham, emphasized her team’s preparation throughout the year. “We’re running everything we can to try to beat the best team, so that we’re ready when that moment happens,” she stated. The Cougars executed their game plan effectively, showcasing strong defense and an aggressive offense from the outset.
The match began with Derryfield applying a full-court press, which disrupted Pembroke’s rhythm. Derryfield’s defense, led by Ella LaFlamme, who registered two blocks in the first quarter, limited Pembroke to just 2-for-12 shooting in the opening period. Meanwhile, Haley Dufoe set the tone offensively, scoring two three-pointers and leading her team with eight points in the first half.
Derryfield capitalized on its offensive momentum, shooting an impressive 54.5% from beyond the arc (6-for-11) and 50% from the field during the first half. The Cougars maintained a commanding lead, heading into halftime with a score of 33-17.
As the game progressed, Pembroke struggled to find an answer to Derryfield’s relentless offensive pressure. Coach Noah Cummings acknowledged the difficulty his team faced, stating, “It seemed like nothing that we were doing really could slow them down. It was just great preparation and great execution.”
In the third quarter, Derryfield extended its lead to 45-25, effectively sealing their victory. Pembroke, despite its efforts, shot only 13-for-42 from the field and managed just one three-pointer out of twelve attempts.
Derryfield’s offense was led by Anna Fazelat, who finished the game with 15 points, supported closely by Dufoe with 14 points and Angie Kenison, who added 13 points on an efficient shooting night. Derryfield concluded with a remarkable 52.9% shooting percentage from three-point range.
The loss marks a bittersweet end for Pembroke, which graduates five seniors, including standout player Kate Stephens, who led her team with 13 points in the championship game. Cummings, in his first year as head coach, expressed a commitment to developing youth basketball in Pembroke, reinforcing the importance of hard work and dedication for upcoming players.
The championship showcased Derryfield’s skill and determination while highlighting the challenges Pembroke will face in rebuilding for next season. As Derryfield celebrates its hard-earned victory, the future looks bright, with only one senior graduating from the roster.
