BREAKING: The highly anticipated sequel, Happy Gilmore 2, has officially launched on Netflix today, July 10, 2024, and fans are already buzzing about its “crazy funny” moments! Director Dennis Dugan, who helmed the original 1996 classic, returns as pro golf commissioner Doug Thompson, bringing nostalgia and excitement to this beloved franchise.
In an exclusive interview, Dugan shared how the idea for a sequel began to bubble up after the release of Grown Ups 2 a decade ago. “That was like 10 years ago, but I think that’s when it started to be like, ‘Hey, maybe this can happen,’” he revealed. After years of speculation, the film has finally arrived, and Dugan assures fans that it stays true to the spirit of the original.
The new installment not only features Dugan and Adam Sandler reprising their roles but also welcomes back Julie Bowen as Virginia Venit and Christopher McDonald as Shooter McGavin. Dugan expressed his enthusiasm about reuniting with the cast, calling it “really fun” to be back. “Getting back with all of the old players in [the movie] was really fun,” he said.
The film includes a star-studded lineup of celebrity cameos, including Kansas City Chiefs star Travis Kelce and renowned rapper Bad Bunny. Dugan, however, remains coy about which surprise appearance thrilled him the most. “We have just the coolest golfers in the world in the movie,” he noted, highlighting the participation of golf legends such as Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler.
In a nod to the original film, Subway has launched a limited-edition Happy Gilmore meal to celebrate the sequel’s release. Additionally, golf enthusiasts can now purchase the $500 Odyssey Hockey Stick Putter, inspired by the iconic equipment from the first movie. Dugan recalls how the idea for the putter came about, stating, “I invented the hockey putter… I said, ‘Hey, he’s a hockey player. Let’s see if some golf company will make a hockey putter for us.’”
As anticipation built, Netflix producers were reportedly thrilled about the project, with Dugan noting, “They visited a lot and they seemed very excited.” The excitement surrounding Happy Gilmore 2 has been palpable since its confirmation in May 2024, capturing the attention of both fans and brands alike.
While Dugan did not direct the sequel, he praised new director Kyle Newacheck as “the right guy to do it,” stating, “He’s a very, very cool guy.” Dugan’s collaborative spirit was evident on set, as he offered guidance while ensuring the film’s comedic essence was preserved. “It’s definitely true to the original,” he assures, emphasizing that the sequel retains its humor and charm.
The emotional connection to Happy Gilmore runs deep for fans, and Dugan believes they will leave the film satisfied. “They’re going to walk out and say, ‘That was a really good movie. And it was just exactly enough Doug Thompson,’” he quipped.
As for future projects, Dugan hinted at ongoing discussions about a potential Grown Ups 3 and revisiting You Don’t Mess with the Zohan. “There’s always been talk about Grown Ups 3,” he stated, keeping the door open for more collaborations with Sandler.
With Happy Gilmore 2 now available for streaming, fans are encouraged to dive into the hilarity once again. As Dugan aptly puts it, “It’s funny. They don’t stop the funniness of it.”
