City officials in Del Mar announced plans for a significant renovation of Jimmy Durante Boulevard, the city’s widest road, as part of a comprehensive paving and striping program valued at $3.5 million. The project is scheduled to begin shortly and is expected to be completed by May 2026.
The renovation will involve the application of two inches of fresh asphalt to the road surface, covering an area stretching from the southern side of the intersection of Via de la Valle to the San Dieguito River Bridge. This initiative aims to enhance both traffic flow and pedestrian safety, as outlined in a recent statement from the city.
Improving Traffic and Safety Measures
A revised striping plan will feature green paint to increase awareness among drivers and cyclists sharing the road. City officials indicated that the construction phase will last approximately three months, with traffic being maintained in both directions throughout the work period.
The scope of the project encompasses at least 340,000 square feet of pavement, equivalent to six football fields. This represents nearly 8% of the total pavement infrastructure maintained by Del Mar. Officials confirmed that the improvements will adhere to the existing curb-to-curb width, ensuring that curbs, gutters, and sidewalks remain intact during the renovation.
The affected road segment spans about three-quarters of a mile and varies in width from 40 to 112 feet, featuring multiple lanes in each direction, designated turn lanes, a striped median, and bicycle lanes for both northbound and southbound traffic.
Breakdown of Project Costs and Funding Sources
The total cost of the project is broken down as follows: design costs amount to $57,300; estimated construction costs are $2,760,000; a construction contingency of $276,000 is included; and the remaining budget of $406,700 will cover construction management, inspection, materials testing, and engineering services.
Funding for the paving and striping program has been sourced from several channels, including the General Fund, SB-1, TransNet, Measure Q, State and Local Fiscal Recovery Funds, and the Regional Transportation Congestion Improvement Program.
This strategic investment reflects the city’s commitment to improving infrastructure and enhancing the safety and experience of all road users in the Del Mar community.
