UPDATE: Kansas Jayhawks star Darryn Peterson, projected as the No. 1 pick in the 2026 NBA draft, is making strides toward a potential return, according to head coach Bill Self. Following the Jayhawks’ 69-59 victory over Notre Dame at the Players Era Festival in Las Vegas, Self confirmed that Peterson is “running and cutting” as he works out in Las Vegas.

Peterson has been sidelined since the Jayhawks’ loss to North Carolina on November 7 and was officially ruled out for this week’s games in Las Vegas. While Self did not provide a specific timeline for Peterson’s return, he expressed optimism: “I am hopeful that it’s soon,” he stated.

In just two games this season, Peterson has averaged an impressive 21.5 points per game and has shown exceptional shooting ability, finishing 6-for-12 from beyond the arc. The Jayhawks currently hold a 3-1 record in his absence, with teammates like Flory Bidunga stepping up to fill the void. Bidunga contributed significantly in the game against Notre Dame, recording 18 points, nine rebounds, five assists, and five blocks.

Despite these promising developments, the Jayhawks are facing further challenges. Senior guard Jayden Dawson sustained an injury during warmups on Monday while attempting a dunk, limiting his playtime to just four minutes. X-rays are pending on his right wrist, and Self indicated Dawson is likely doubtful for the remainder of the festival. “It was disappointing because we’re kind of short-handed right now,” Self added.

As Kansas prepares to face Syracuse on Tuesday, the team is grappling with injuries and the need to adapt quickly. “There are no excuses. We definitely have to figure out who we are without him,” said teammate Bryson Tiller, who logged 17 points and nine rebounds against Notre Dame.

With Peterson’s condition being re-evaluated every few days, fans are eager for updates on his recovery and potential return to the court. The Jayhawks remain focused on maintaining their momentum while navigating these setbacks.

Stay tuned for more updates on Peterson’s return and the Jayhawks’ performance in the ongoing tournament.
