BREAKING: Darnell Miller, the standout running back for Santee High School in downtown Los Angeles, is making headlines this season with an impressive total of 1,159 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns. As the City Section leader at midseason, the 17-year-old is proving himself as a vital player for the 4-1 Santee team.

Every day, Miller balances school, family, and football, walking his 10-year-old brother Fredrick to school before heading to practice. His dedication is evident, as he’s not just a talented athlete but also a caring sibling who often includes Fredrick in his football journey.

In a recent game, despite a 43-7 loss to University, Miller showcased his skills by rushing for an astonishing 209 yards. The opposing coach, Bryan Robinson, praised him, stating, “He’s the No. 1 running back in the City Section.” This recognition underlines Miller’s growing reputation in the sport.

Miller’s journey to this point is remarkable. After moving from Memphis to Los Angeles in late 2018, he initially did not play football in his freshman year, opting instead to play point guard on the varsity basketball team. However, the football coaching staff saw potential in him, convincing him to switch sports. “The coaches made me come out,” Miller shared. “They kept asking me and I said I’d give it a try. Now I love it.”

Transitioning from a receiver to running back midseason last year due to a teammate’s injury, Miller has thrived in his new role. Coach John Petty describes him as “a natural at running back,” highlighting his adaptability and skill on the field. Alongside his football commitments, Miller also plays defensive back and continues to excel in track, clocking a 4.6 second time in the 40-yard dash.

Miller’s humble demeanor reflects his upbringing, having been raised by a single mother. He takes his responsibility as an older brother seriously, ensuring Fredrick feels included in his athletic journey. “Playing football has helped me become more vocal,” Miller noted, while underscoring his desire to improve. “I feel I can still get better.”

As the season progresses, several other players are gaining traction, including sophomore quarterback Chase Curren from Crespi, senior quarterback Jack Thomas from Palisades, and junior receiver Paul Turner from Birmingham. Meanwhile, surprise teams such as Los Alamitos (7-0) and Crespi (5-0) are also making headlines this season.

As the midseason report unfolds, all eyes will remain on Darnell Miller as he continues to captivate fans and elevate Santee’s game. With his current performance, the stakes are high, and his journey is just beginning. Stay tuned for more updates on his remarkable season and the impact he’s making in the City Section.
