Approximately ten percent of couples experience infertility, prompting many to explore avenues beyond traditional in vitro fertilization (IVF). A growing number are turning to restorative reproductive medicine (RRM), a holistic approach that focuses on identifying and treating the underlying causes of infertility rather than relying solely on IVF.
Karen and Anthony Monetti, a couple from Oklahoma, are among those who have found hope through RRM. After nine years of marriage, they felt a spiritual calling to start a family. Anthony shared, “Put it in God’s hands and let go,” a sentiment echoed by Karen. Unfortunately, their journey was marred by four heartbreaking miscarriages. Karen expressed her grief, stating, “Nothing has hurt, and I’ve never grieved so much as the infertility journey. But one thing I want to say is there’s hope.”
Faced with recommendations for IVF, the Monettis instead opted for RRM. Karen recalled, “My hematologist said, ‘I really want you to go through IVF. You’re older; you don’t want to run the risk of any genetic defects.'” However, the couple remained steadfast in their belief that their fertility journey was in divine hands. They were particularly concerned about the ethical implications of creating unused embryos. “I couldn’t bring myself to that, knowing that there was life there that was not inside of me,” Karen explained.
Understanding Restorative Reproductive Medicine
RRM operates on the principle of discovering and addressing the root causes of infertility. Unlike IVF, which often circumvents underlying issues, RRM practitioners conduct thorough evaluations of hormonal and ovulation cycles. The Monettis sought assistance at the MorningStar Family Health Center, where they were treated by Dr. Edward Fleming and Dr. Jean Golden-Tevald.
Dr. Golden-Tevald noted, “In 20 years of doing this, I have never had a woman we evaluated that we came up and said, ‘We can’t find anything wrong.’ There’s always something.” The evaluation process includes extensive blood tests and assessments for both partners. Dr. Fleming highlighted the importance of examining male health, noting that low testosterone can impact sperm counts and overall male function.
In the Monettis’ case, Karen faced complications such as blood clots and hormone imbalances. Dr. Golden-Tevald emphasized that infertility is rarely caused by a single factor; multiple issues are often at play.
A Journey to Parenthood
After starting a regimen that included blood thinners and hormone treatments, the Monettis’ situation improved significantly. Their perseverance culminated in a joyful moment when Karen gave birth to a healthy baby girl. “My pregnancy was a huge success,” Karen shared. “We finally have our baby, our miracle.”
Doctors involved in RRM emphasize that its success rates can equal or even exceed those of IVF, with the added benefits of lower risk and cost. Dr. Fleming remarked, “There’s really no risk, and it’s really inexpensive too.”
Despite the effectiveness of RRM, awareness remains limited. Karen expressed concern that many couples struggling with infertility may not know about this alternative approach. “I don’t think many people know it exists,” she stated. “I think RRM is not talked about in mainstream medical practices.”
Dr. Fleming acknowledged that the lack of financial incentives contributes to RRM’s obscurity. “Unfortunately, RRM is not very well known, and a big reason for that is because it’s not advertised as much,” he explained.
Legislative efforts are underway to enhance access to RRM. Oklahoma Senator James Lankford recently sponsored the RESTORE Act, aimed at prioritizing the treatment of underlying infertility causes. This initiative seeks to help families realize their dreams of parenthood. As Congress prepares to revisit the RESTORE Act, advocates like the Monettis continue to share their positive experiences, hoping to inform others about RRM.
“I recommend everybody I know who struggles with fertility,” Karen said. “I’ve given out Dr. Eddie and Dr. Jean’s information because, again, God gave them to us, and they are incredible.”
The Monettis’ story illustrates the potential of restorative reproductive medicine to offer hope where traditional methods may fall short, encouraging couples to explore all available options in their journey towards parenthood.
