Priced at $48, this device allows guests to activate special lighting effects at over 100 locations around the Buena Park theme park. This new feature enhances the immersive experience of the annual Halloween event, which runs on select nights through November 1, 2023.
The lantern’s capabilities were detailed by maze designer Gus Krueger in a video shared on Instagram. Guests can activate a range of visual effects by flipping a switch on the lantern to switch from static to interactive mode. Once in this mode, pressing a button on the front of the lantern triggers effects as users approach designated spots around the park.

The interactive lantern transforms the experience on several attractions within Knott’s Scary Farm. For instance, users can turn the “K” sign at the top of the Sky Cabin into a fiery lighting scheme. It also activates smoke effects and bathes the temple facade of the Jaguar coaster in a dramatic red hue. Other effects include briefly dimming the lights on the exterior of the Calico Mine Ride and changing the lighting on the Supreme Scream drop tower from green to red.
Beyond these rides, the lantern enhances the spooky ambiance throughout the park. It activates effects in 10 haunted mazes and five scare zones. Guests can witness a skeleton springing from the Forsaken Lake, trigger audio effects at the entrance of the Blind Tiger speakeasy, and even animate a terrifying spider tree.
