January marks the celebration of Picture Book Month, and the Contra Costa County Library system is inviting families to join in with the theme “Bundle Up with Picture Books.” This initiative highlights the importance of reading picture books, which not only enhance children’s vocabulary and comprehension but also foster special bonding experiences between children and adults.

The library system will host a variety of engaging activities throughout the month. Visitors can participate in a cozy seek-and-find, a hot cocoa craft, and a book bundle checkout challenge at any branch. Library patrons can also explore themed booklists and discover additional events by visiting the library’s website at ccclib.org.

For those looking to expand their reading lists in 2024, the library offers a personalized book recommendation service. Interested readers can complete a brief questionnaire at ccclib.org/personalized-picks to receive curated titles tailored to their preferences. This initiative aims to encourage reading and help patrons discover new favorites.

In addition to picture book-related activities, the Contra Costa County Library is also seeking volunteers to assist as social media ambassadors. This role allows community members to promote library collections, resources, and programs from home. Interested individuals can sign up to receive communication about this initiative without the need for a formal application.

For music enthusiasts, the library offers access to Alexander Street, a performing arts database featuring a vast selection of classical music performances and documentaries. This resource is available for free to library cardholders and can be explored on the Digital Resources webpage at ccclib.org/resources.

As the Lunar New Year approaches, the library is hosting an introduction to Chinese calligraphy with instructor Jojo Liu. Attendees will learn the basics of traditional calligraphy, including brush techniques and writing New Year sayings. Registration is required, and participants should be aware that some locations may fill quickly. Classes will take place at various times across the county, including:
– Walnut Creek Library on January 5 at 16:00
– San Pablo Library on January 8 at 16:00
– El Cerrito Library on January 8 at 18:00
– San Ramon Library on January 15 at 16:00
– Antioch Library on January 17 at 11:00

The library’s calendar also features other noteworthy events. On January 10 at 12:00, local author and illustrator Robert Liu-Trujillo will be available for a meet-and-greet at the El Sobrante Library. This event provides an opportunity for the community to engage with a creative talent from the area.

Additionally, on January 13 at 18:00, a workshop titled “Clutter-Free in 2026 — How to Let Go and Get Organized” will take place at the Martinez Library. This session, led by professional organizer Jenna Carlsson, focuses on techniques for decluttering and creating a peaceful living space. Registration is necessary for this event.

For younger audiences, the Dougherty Station Library will host a Capoeira class for children aged 5 to 8 on January 17 at 11:00. This Afro-Brazilian cultural art combines martial arts, dance, and acrobatics, welcoming participants of all abilities and experience levels.

Teens can join a DIY Boba Workshop on January 22 at 16:30, hosted by the San Ramon Teen Advisory Board. In this hands-on session, participants will learn to create their favorite boba tea drinks. All materials will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis.

The Contra Costa County Library encourages community members to sign up for a library card to access free books and resources. For further inquiries regarding library services and programming, residents can contact the library system via email at [email protected] or text questions to 925-344-5524.

With a variety of activities planned, the library aims to promote literacy and community engagement throughout Picture Book Month and beyond.
