On August 9, 2023, the Achievers Brunch Association hosted its inaugural Big Black Ball at the Free Library of Philadelphia, bringing together community members to support local college-bound teens. Themed “Sophisticated Black Hollywood,” the event aimed to celebrate and uplift young Black scholars as they transition from high school to higher education.
Founded in 2014 by Director Mister Mann Frisby, the Achievers Brunch Association focuses on mentoring young Black high school seniors. The organization’s mission has since expanded, providing ongoing support as these students advance in college. The network offers resources such as internships, career programming, and financial assistance, fostering connections among Black scholars.
Co-director Randy Shine, who joined the group in 2019, emphasized the importance of countering negative stereotypes faced by young Black men in Philadelphia. “It really started off as a grassroots effort,” Shine explained. “It just grew and morphed into what it is now.” Currently, Shine and Frisby are the only full-time leaders of the group, which operates on a volunteer basis.
The Big Black Ball served as both a celebration and a fundraiser, with the goal of creating a platform for young scholars to feel supported by their community. “We wanted to show them that people are coming out to support them,” Shine stated. “We wanted the people who came out to support us to see the young men who are in the organization.”
The event attracted several local influencers, including one who traveled from California to lend support. The evening was designed to capture the essence of high-profile events like the Met Gala, all while promoting a noble cause. Shine noted that the event was successful in meeting its fundraising goals, which will directly benefit students’ college journeys.
As the organization looks ahead, interest from other local groups and city leaders has increased, paving the way for future events. Shine expressed optimism about the potential for broader community involvement. “What we wanted and we just hope is that more people will pour into this organization because it’s much needed,” he said.
The Achievers Brunch Association continues to accept donations to support its mission. Community members are encouraged to visit the organization’s website to contribute. As the inaugural ball concludes, the hope is that the momentum will inspire further engagement and support for young Black scholars in Philadelphia.
This event not only underscored the achievements of local youth but also highlighted the community’s commitment to fostering an environment where they can thrive. By rallying behind these scholars, the Achievers Brunch Association is making strides toward reshaping perceptions and building a bright future for young Black men in the region.
