Lake Kinney passed away peacefully at her home in Livermore, California, on October 15, 2025, at the age of 92. Known for her adventurous spirit and dedication to education, Lake’s life was marked by numerous travels and cherished relationships that left a lasting impact on those who knew her.

Born Lake Schoffner on December 1, 1932, in Junction City, Kansas, she was the daughter of Porter and Florence Schoffner. Lake grew up with two sisters, Betty and Louise, who predeceased her. She graduated from Kansas State University, embarking on a career that would take her across the globe.

Throughout her life, Lake served as a teacher for dependents of the Armed Services, spending time in locations such as the Philippines, Germany, and Libya. Her experiences allowed her to travel extensively throughout Asia, Europe, Africa, and the Middle East, enriching her understanding of diverse cultures and fostering a deep appreciation for global perspectives.

After returning to the United States, Lake settled in Scottsdale, Arizona, where she raised her two children and formed lasting friendships. Her life took a significant turn during a high school reunion in the 1990s when she reconnected with classmate Jack Kinney. Their bond quickly grew, leading Lake to relocate to her beloved Hermosa Beach, California. The couple shared many adventures, living together in Jack’s cherished ocean-view home until his passing in 2015.

Following Jack’s death, Lake moved to Northern California to be closer to her children. In her later years, she continued to travel and made numerous new friends, demonstrating her enduring zest for life. She is survived by her daughter, Stefanie Gran, son-in-law Steve Gran, grandson Andrei Gran, her son Jon Ellstrom, and son-in-law Edgar Tamayo.

Lake expressed a heartfelt wish for her ashes to be scattered in the San Francisco Bay by the shores of Angel Island, where Jack’s ashes were also spread. This final resting place symbolizes their enduring love and connection.

Lake Kinney’s kind heart and adventurous spirit will be profoundly missed by her family and friends. As they reflect on her life, they remember a woman who brought joy, love, and inspiration to many. Her memory will undoubtedly continue to bring smiles and warmth to the hearts of those who knew her.
