John Joseph Matwijcow III, aged 59, passed away peacefully on January 5, 2026, in The Villages, Florida. Born on January 16, 1966, in Perth Amboy, New Jersey, John was raised in South Plainfield before living in various locations, including Bridgewater, New Jersey, and Nazareth and Saylorsburg, Pennsylvania. He made the move to Florida in January 2025, where he continued to engage with his community and enjoy life.

John completed his education at the McCauley School, an institution dedicated to students with special needs. His enthusiasm for life was evident through his participation in the Special Olympics, where he showcased his determination and joy in being active. He also benefited from supported services through THE ARC, which allowed him to connect with others and partake in meaningful daily activities.

A Life of Joy and Community Engagement

Those who knew John describe him as possessing a gentle spirit and an ability to bring quiet joy to those around him. He had a profound love for music, especially the works of Elvis Presley, and enjoyed watching his favorite television game shows, westerns, and movies. Creative pursuits also held a special place in his life, with coloring and art being significant activities.

John had a particular fondness for Italian cuisine and delighted in the comfort of fast food, with McDonald’s being a favorite. These small joys contributed to his vibrant personality, which endeared him to family and friends alike.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John Joseph Matwijcow, Jr. and Patricia Ann Cirigliano Matwijcow, as well as his mentor and brother, Joseph Matika. John is survived by his loving sisters, Kimberly Ann Matwijcow Kopke and Jessica Ann Matwijcow Clark, who served as his primary caregiver and cherished him deeply. His memory will also be held dear by numerous relatives, including David, Christopher, Brenda, Adrian, Jasmine, Emily, Mark, Isabel, Jacob, Chelsea, and Vega (Jonathan).

Celebration of Life Planned

John was a beloved brother, uncle, and family member, and his passing leaves a significant void in the lives of those who knew and loved him. A Celebration of Life will be organized in the near future, with details to follow.
