Suzanne R. Rubincam, a respected music educator and beloved community member, passed away on September 28, 2025, in Redondo Beach, California. She was 84 years old. Rubincam was a long-time resident of Palos Verdes Estates and dedicated her life to nurturing a love of music in children.
Born in Kansas City, Missouri, and raised in Evanston, Illinois, Rubincam attended Northwestern University, where she met her future husband, Paul Pierre Rubincam, Jr.. Their romance began at a Debutante Ball, where Paul captivated Suzanne with his charm. The couple married and moved to California, ultimately settling in their Lunada Bay neighborhood, where they lived for over 55 years.
Legacy of Music and Community Engagement
Known affectionately by many names—Sue, Susie, Ms. Music, and Grammy—Rubincam dedicated her career to teaching music at Rolling Hills Country Day School. There, she created elaborate plays that showcased her students’ talents, fostering their love for music and the arts. Her passion for education touched the lives of countless children and left a lasting impact on the school community.
Outside the classroom, Rubincam enjoyed spending her summers socializing with friends at the Portuguese Bend Club. She dedicated her cooler days to needlepointing, crafting intricate works of art that she often gifted to loved ones. Rubincam also cherished her time at the piano and had a particular fondness for cultivating roses, which thrived under her care. Her joyful spirit and engaging smile lit up every room she entered.
Family and Personal Life
Rubincam was predeceased by her husband of more than 60 years, Paul, as well as her parents, Ellis and Elizabeth Ruddick. She is survived by her son, Paul Richard (Rich) Rubincam, and his wife, Denise; her daughter, Amy Rubincam Steadman, and her husband, Will; and three granddaughters, Chloe Rae Rubincam, Summer Elizabeth Steadman, and Mia Christine Steadman. As a loving mother and grandmother, Rubincam found joy in her family, relishing every moment spent with her grandchildren, whom she adored.
Family and friends remember Rubincam and her husband as a dynamic duo on the dance floor, often among the best dancers at events. Their enduring love and companionship were a testament to their strong bond, and many believe they are now dancing together once more.
In accordance with Suzanne’s wishes, no funeral service is planned. In lieu of flowers, her family encourages donations to organizations dedicated to finding a cure for Alzheimer’s disease.
