Miriam “Mimi” C. Brody, a dedicated community volunteer and cherished member of her family, passed away on August 10, 2025, in Torrance, California. She died surrounded by loved ones and the music she adored, leaving behind a legacy of service and compassion that touched many lives.
A Life Rooted in Community Service
Born in Los Angeles in 1927, Mimi spent most of her life in southern California, with a brief period at the University of California, Berkeley, where she completed her college education. After returning to southern California, she met and married Robert “Bob” Brody, establishing a family that would become an integral part of her identity.
In the late 1960s, the Brody family relocated to Torrance to support Bob’s career at Harvey Aluminum. It was in Torrance that Mimi found her passion for volunteering at Torrance Memorial, where she made significant contributions over the course of more than five decades. Her dedication included roles such as past-president of the Auxiliary and co-manager of the gift shop, where she was known as the “plush” buyer.
Mimi’s commitment to the hospital extended beyond her managerial roles. She volunteered throughout various departments, including the outpatient pharmacy and information desks. Remarkably, she accumulated over 33,000 hours of service, making her the longest-serving volunteer in the history of Torrance Memorial Medical Center, with a service record spanning 56 years.
Remembering a Beloved Matriarch
A lifelong resident of the South Bay, Mimi had a deep appreciation for the beach, sunshine, and the mild Californian weather. She is survived by her two daughters, Marilyn and Jill, her grandchildren, Rebecca and Daniel, and her great-granddaughter, Karlee. Her family describes her as a guiding light and a source of unwavering support.
Services honoring Mimi’s life were held at Green Hills on August 13, followed by a reception at Torrance Memorial on August 14. Family, friends, fellow volunteers, and hospital staff gathered to share stories and celebrate her remarkable contributions to the community.
In lieu of flowers, the Brody family has requested donations to the Torrance Memorial Foundation, allowing her legacy of service to continue. Mimi’s life was well-lived, and she will be dearly missed by those whose lives she touched. May her memory be a blessing to all who knew her.
