JoAnn Slocum, a cherished member of her community and a devoted educator, passed away on January 4, 2026, after a brief illness. Born in Schenectady, New York, she was the daughter of Albert and Mary DePalma Popolizio, both of whom predeceased her. JoAnn’s legacy continues through her husband, David Slocum, her son Christopher Slocum, and her beloved grandchildren, Cameron, Jack, and Gabriella “GG” Slocum, all residing in Connecticut.

JoAnn’s life was shaped by strong family ties, including her sister, Rosemary Popolizio Stewart, and her husband, Clifford Stewart, along with her niece, Michele Stewart Mannino, and her husband, Rosario Mannino, who also live in Schenectady. The connections she built extended beyond family, encompassing many cousins and friends who will miss her dearly.

JoAnn met David while they both worked at Alpert’s Furniture Store, where he served as the sales manager and she as the credit manager. Their partnership blossomed into a beautiful marriage that lasted over 50 years. JoAnn was known for her passion for reading and her dedication to her career at Craig Elementary School in the Niskayuna School District, where she worked for many years before enjoying a fulfilling retirement.

In her leisure time, JoAnn found joy in numerous activities such as spending time at the Schenectady Yacht Club and traveling in her RV. She particularly cherished trips to Mystic with her grandchildren and outings to the Finger Lakes, where she created lasting memories. Friends and family fondly remember JoAnn for her thoughtfulness; she never missed an opportunity to celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, and holidays with those she loved.

Throughout her life, JoAnn faced challenges with remarkable bravery and strength. Her resilience served as an inspiration to all who knew her. As her family reflects on her life, they express profound gratitude for the impact she had on their lives and the lives of many in the community.

A wake will be held on January 15, 2026, from 15:30 to 17:00 at New Comer Cremations & Funerals, located at 343 New Karner Rd., Colonie, NY 12205. A memorial service will follow at 17:00. In accordance with the family’s wishes, a private burial will occur at a later date at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery.
