Beth began her nursing career in the emergency room at Lynchburg Hospital before marrying Hannon Marshall Burford in 1952. The couple settled in Newport News, Virginia, where Hannon enjoyed a distinguished 45-year career as an engineer at the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company.

Beth and Hannon raised two daughters, Ann Burford Jett and Elizabeth “Betsy” Burford Poulsen, in Hampton, Virginia. As a devoted stay-at-home mother, Beth dedicated her time and energy to her family and community. In 1973, she returned to nursing, serving as a school nurse at Booker, Baron, and Smith Elementary Schools, positively impacting countless students.

Legacy of Service and Community Engagement

After retiring at age 62, Beth and Hannon embraced a life of adventure, traveling and creating lasting memories together. In 2007, they moved to the Chesapeake Retirement Home in Newport News, where they enjoyed independent living. Following Hannon’s transition into the Memory Support section of the facility, Beth demonstrated unwavering devotion, spending every moment by his side for the next three years.

Throughout her life, Beth exemplified community spirit. She served as chair of the local voting precinct, volunteered at the Charles Taylor Library, and actively participated in the Riverdale Garden Club.
