Catherine “Cathy” Shea McCurdy, a prominent figure in Hermosa Beach, California, passed away in her sleep at home on December 3, 2025, at the age of 74. Her death was attributed to complications related to diabetes. Known for her extensive community service and leadership roles, Cathy leaves behind a legacy that has significantly impacted the local area.

Born in Queens, New York, Cathy was the daughter of Raymond and Erma “Susie” Shea. She spent her childhood in Hermosa Beach and graduated from Redondo Union High School in the class of 1969. In 1978, Cathy married Richard H. “Dick” McCurdy, and together they contributed to the family business, the Shea Company, while also becoming well-known for their volunteer efforts.

Cathy’s commitment to community service was evident through her various roles in local organizations. She served on the Hermosa Beach School Board and dedicated many years to the Hermosa Valley School. Her passion for education led her to establish the Kiwanis Builders Club at the school, fostering leadership skills among students. She was also a strong supporter of the Hermosa Beach Education Foundation and the Sister City Association.

For nearly a decade, Cathy represented Hermosa Beach on the Los Angeles County Beach Commission, making significant contributions to local governance. Alongside her husband, she was an active member of the Kiwanis Club of Hermosa Beach, where both held leadership positions, including the role of President. In recognition of her outstanding contributions, Cathy was honored as the “Hermosa Beach Woman of the Year” in 1998.

Cathy’s dedication to her community and her leadership in various initiatives left an indelible mark on Hermosa Beach.

Funeral services for Cathy McCurdy are scheduled for 11:00 a.m. on February 21, 2026, at St. Cross Episcopal Church, located at 1818 Monterey Blvd., Hermosa Beach. Following the service, a celebration of her life will take place at the Kiwanis Hall at 2515 Valley Dr., Hermosa Beach. Family, friends, and community members are invited to pay their respects and honor a woman who dedicated so much of her life to the betterment of her community.
