Janet L. Withers, a cherished member of the Blandon, Pennsylvania community, passed away on December 13, 2025. Born in Reading, Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of the late Mabel (James) and Russell Beard. Janet is remembered for her dedication to education, her love for family, and her vibrant spirit.
Throughout her life, Janet made significant contributions to her community. She married Kenneth Withers in 1971, building a loving home where they raised two daughters, Karyn E. Morrison and Mariellen L. Withers. The couple celebrated over 54 years of marriage, during which they traveled extensively across the United States and abroad.
A Commitment to Education and Community Service
Janet graduated from Fleetwood Area High School in 1964 and remained actively involved with her classmates, frequently organizing reunions for the Class of ’64 and connecting with fellow alumni known as the “Tiger Lilies.” After pursuing her studies at Kutztown University, she devoted 38 years to teaching in the Reading School District. The latter part of her career was spent as a librarian at Riverside Elementary, where she inspired countless students.
Her commitment extended beyond the classroom. Janet served as Superintendent of Sunday School at St. Paul’s U.C.C. in Fleetwood, Pennsylvania, and taught various educational programs, including Vacation Bible School. Even after retirement, her passion for reading and education thrived, as she participated in a book club at the Muhlenberg Community Library and shared her love for storytelling with young readers.
Remembering a Life Filled with Love
Janet leaves behind her husband, Kenneth E. Withers, her daughters, and her beloved tuxedo cat, Skittles. She is also survived by grandchildren, grandpets, several nieces and nephews, and a multitude of friends who will remember her for her infectious laughter and unconditional love. Janet was predeceased by her sisters, Katherine Kershaw and Patricia Loose.
In honor of Janet’s memory, her family requests that contributions be made to the public library system or to an animal shelter of your choice, rather than sending flowers.
