The Civic Leadership Academy hosted a reception on September 5, 2023, to honor the 139th Airlift Wing of the Missouri Air National Guard in St. Joseph, Missouri. This event aimed to deepen community understanding of the Airlift Wing’s operations and explore ways for residents to support local military initiatives.

Engagement and Partnership Opportunities

During the reception, community members interacted with leadership from the 139th Airlift Wing. The event provided a platform for local businesses to discuss potential collaborations with the Air National Guard and discover how they can contribute to the region’s well-being. According to Natalie Hawn, president and CEO of the St. Joseph Chamber of Commerce, “It’s designed to be a way for them to interact with leadership at the 139th, and there will be businesses with opportunities to learn about potential partnerships and learn how to better serve St. Joseph.”

This marks the third year of the annual event, which highlights the economic and community benefits of maintaining the 139th Airlift Wing’s presence in St. Joseph. Hawn emphasized that many residents may not be aware of the unit’s global responsibilities, such as training NATO nations on advanced weapons systems. “It’s a chance for them to go and learn what happens at the 139th and how we can be proud partners here in St. Joe and be proud of having our air force base,” she added.

Training and Economic Impact

The event also focused on educational opportunities available through the Air National Guard. Barrette Golden, Wing Commander of the 139th Airlift Wing, highlighted the various training programs that equip young individuals with valuable skills. “The Air Force provides a lot of training and opportunities to where we can teach somebody to be a welder or a mechanic or a plumber or a pilot,” Golden explained. This initiative aims to guide young people towards successful careers, not only within the military but in the civilian workforce as well.

Organizers of the reception expressed their commitment to showcasing the leadership opportunities provided by the Air National Guard. They also aimed to illustrate the significant contributions the unit makes, both locally and nationally. As the community continues to engage with the 139th Airlift Wing, the hope is to strengthen the bond between military personnel and St. Joseph residents, fostering a supportive environment for all.

As the event concluded, attendees left with a deeper appreciation for the Airlift Wing’s role in the community and the broader implications of its operations. The collaboration between local leadership and military representatives is seen as a vital step in ensuring the ongoing success of both the community and its armed forces.
