On Friday, the community of Collingdale, Pennsylvania, gathered to celebrate the return of James Dosii, an 11-year-old sixth grader who recently overcame a serious health crisis. After nearly three months of treatment for a brain infection at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), James was warmly welcomed back by his classmates, teachers, and local officials at Darby Township School.
James’s ordeal began on December 25, 2023, when what initially seemed like sinus pain escalated into a life-threatening condition. Rushed to the hospital, he faced debilitating headaches, fevers, and a rapid spread of infection that caused swelling in his brain. “The pain started getting worse. I had to go to the hospital because of a brain infection,” James recounted, reflecting on the severity of his symptoms.
His mother expressed the emotional toll this experience took on their family, stating, “It was devastating for me… unexpected.” The Dosii family found comfort in the medical care provided at CHOP, with James specifically thanking the doctors and nurses who assisted him during his recovery. “I want to thank all the nurses and doctors that helped me, Neuropsych for helping me with my brain,” he added.
Community Support and Celebration
To commemorate his recovery, the Collingdale Fire Department escorted James home, creating a festive atmosphere filled with cheers and applause. Mayor Donna Matteo Spadea played a pivotal role in organizing the celebration, rallying community members to raise funds for the Dosii family. The initiative resulted in a $2,000 donation along with gift cards to local businesses, including Shop Rite and Wawa.
James’s sister, Jenmatee Dosii, who also attends Darby Township School, expressed her gratitude for the community’s support. “I feel grateful that my community came together just to show how much they care about my brother,” she said, emphasizing the sense of unity and love that surrounded their family during this challenging time.
The event not only marked a significant moment for James but also highlighted the strength of community bonds in times of crisis. As the celebration concluded, the Collingdale Fire Department ensured James made it home safely, providing him the opportunity to rest and recover further.
While it remains uncertain when James will return to school, his experience has left a lasting impact on both him and his community. The overwhelming support from those around him serves as a reminder of the strength found in solidarity and compassion during difficult moments.
